The New Photoshop Elements is a More Ethical Photoshop

Today, Adobe announced its new Photoshop Elements program. With it, they’re heavily pushing the new AI features — which apparently have been in some smartphones for over a year. The new update, which is available for desktops, is quite an odd one to be releasing now as many of the features don’t seem all that groundbreaking. However, it’s also not really leaning into what I’d consider to be generative AI. The new features seem more like assistive AI — which we’re totally on-board with.

New Features in Photoshop Elements 2025

The following features are listing on Adobe’s latest blog post about the new Photoshop Elements 2024.

  • NEW Simply brush to remove objects.: Make anything disappear in seconds with the new AI-powered Remove tool and the Object Removal Guided Edit. Powered by AI
  • NEW Add realistic depth of field with precise control.: Choose your focal point and the new AI-powered Depth Blur filter automatically adds blur just where it’s needed. Then adjust details like blur strength, focal distance, and focal range for the perfect look. Powered by AI
  • NEW Change the color of any object.: Just use the automatic selection tools to choose what you want to change, pick your new color, and refine to suit your style.
  • NEW Seamlessly combine multiple pics.: Blend the subject from one, the background from another, and elements from many more to create a never-before-seen image.
  • NEW Create motion effects with four new Quick Actions.: With just one click, create a sense of camera motion or add animated sparkles, a blinking heart, or an animated frame.
  • NEW Create with modern textures and graphics.: Add a designer’s touch with textured photo backgrounds and embellish creations, social images, and more with fun graphics.
  • NEW Be creative with the web companion app (beta).: Add moving overlays, change backgrounds automatically, adjust the look of your photos, share to social with QR codes, and more.
  • NEW Edit and create with the mobile companion app (beta).: Add fun pattern overlays. Use sliders to adjust light, color, and effects. Crop, straighten, and remove backgrounds with one-click Quick Actions. And more.
  • NEW Apple M3 chip support.: With full support for the new Apple M3 systems, you’ll enjoy faster performance on Mac computers.

Who is Photoshop Elements 2025 For?

Believe it or not, I used to use Photoshop Elements all the time in addition to Lightroom. But I only ever used it for special editing needs. These days, I’m not sure who really needs it. Personally speaking, I’ve stopped using all Adobe products except for Behance. After nearly 20 years in my photo career, I barely ever use Photoshop, and Capture One does most of what I want and need to do.

If you purchase the Photography subscription for Adobe Creative Cloud, you get Photoshop anyway. So truly, I’m not sure who this program is for since a wide majority of these things can be done in Lightroom and a smartphone app.

We currently have a review code for the software, and we’re going to explore it while comparing it to some of the other things that photographers might need. My hypothesis so far makes me believe that it isn’t for photographers — and instead that it’s for mobile photographers who use a computer to do their editing.
