When one speaks about acquisitions or buyouts in the camera market, the most recent and peculiar examples are DJI and Hasselblad. The former is Chinese drone manufacturers, and the latter is a heritage Swedish company that earned its legacy by sending its cameras to the moon. The news, which broke out in 2015, confused many. But there is always a bright side to the most unconventional teams. In this case, DJI improved its already great drones by including the Hasselblad camera in the DJI Mavic Pro 3. However, it now seems that DJI intends to take this collaboration a step further by launching a new mirrorless camera. And that has excited some DJI fans more than one can imagine.
DJI Full Frame Camera and A New Leaked Image
In a report by Mirrorless Rumors, it seems that DJI fans have taken the liberty to design a camera that they want from the company. The fake image, which resembles the Leica M9 Titanium Edition, has been going viral on the Chinese website Weibo. While there is no confirmation whether DJI is even working on a full-frame mirrorless camera, the tittle-tattle believes that the Chinese company is ready to compete with its Japanese counterparts.

However, if Hasselblad is involved, it is bound to be a good camera. A medium format is supposed to be slow, so with Hasselblad, one experiences the joy of seeing one’s vision turn to life. A traditional film camera, the company transitioned to mirrorless in 2016 with the X1D-50c, which they built on with the X1D. In fact, in our review, we noted that the X1D is a great option for street photography despite it being a first-generation device from Hasselblad.
Then came more cameras, such as the X2D 100c, a premium camera that lacks fast autofocus but produces cinematic images. The Hasselblad 501C also offers exceptional experience and image quality, urging users to slow down and take a moment. The 501C, coupled with the CFV 100 back, can also allow you to switch between film and digital. The 500 series camera also ventured into NONS Instax Back, which allows Hasselblad users to get Instax prints with their device. Look at the ingenuity. There is also the Hasselblad 907x CFV 100C, which is great for commercial or portrait photographers who do not need to depend on image stabilization or a fast camera.
Overall, Hasselblad continued to build on their legacy, but due to the money crunch and short-term goals, they lost a lot on the way. This is where DJI can come to improve on the heritage.
DJI x Hasselblad Could Rival Its Compeitiors
While a medium-format camera is breathtaking for fine-art photography, we still think a company like Hasselblad can achieve more with DJI. They already face a threat from Fujifilm’s GFX series, which is way ahead of Hasselblad and considerably cheaper. Some other features that GFX does better are contrast-detect autofocus systems, better lenses, and LCDs with higher resolution. There are many reasons why many photographers shooting demanding genres would pivot to the GFX.

While their legacy is important, Hasselblad has a chance to beat its rivals like Leica, who are again miles ahead. The German company understood that times were changing and transformed its strategy to meet that demand. DJI could do the same, perhaps by creating faster Hasselblad cameras, which are also cost-effective. DJI’s drone has repeatedly proved that the company knows what they are doing. Their L-mount alliance with Sigma, Leica, and more will further help the Swedish camera maker reach its former glory days.
In the past, we also highlighted how third-party Chinese lens manufacturers are giving Japanese and German camera companies tough competition. DJI’s venture into the mirrorless market with Hasselblad could tip the scale. Not only will the device be fairly priced well, but the innovations that can be achieved by the two giants are exemplary. From the looks of it, DJI and Hasselblad’s sky is the limit. Whether it’s the mirrorless ASP-C or full-frame camera, both companies stand a chance to shake up the camera market, which has seemed to slumber since the pandemic.
