Sony’s greatest advantage has been its early adoption of mirrorless technology. While Epson, Lumix, and even Nikon had their own mirrorless versions, Sony saw the future unlike any other. Their Alpha range, which continues to be the most applauded series in the mirrorless segment, changed the future of the camera industry in 2013. This was the year that the company introduced the a7 and the a7R, marking the commencement of one of the early full-frame CMOS sensor mirrorless cameras. What Canon and Nikon set out to do in 2018, Sony had already achieved and even surpassed their own standards. This is also why Sony has consistently reigned the mirrorless market, controlling a major chunk. And now, in July 2024, the company yet again proved that it is a tough competitor with the latest sales record.
According to Digicameinfo, Sony’s three mirrorless cameras ranked at the top of the Japanese store Map Camera‘s best mirrorless camera sales chart. While they did not come up first, Sony did secure three rankings in the top 10. Look at the ranking below:
- Nikon Z6 III
- FujiFilm X-T50
- Sony a7C II
- Nikon Zf
- Nikon Z8
- Canon EOS R6 MK II
- Sony a7RV
- Sony a7IV
- Lumix S9
- Lumix GH7
Similarly, another Japanese store, Yodobashi Camera, also revealed its list of the best-selling mirrorless cameras. However, here, Sony took the leading position with its a7C II zoom lens kit, while the a7C II’s body alone took the second place. The third position went to Nikon Z8, but the 7R V and a7 IV took fourth and fifth place, respectively. The last entry again on the list was by A6700, after the Canon EOS R10, Fujifilm X-T50, Canon EOS R50, and Nikon Z30.
In the first list, Nikon’s newly launched Z6 III was an obvious spot stealer, as it is also the world’s first camera with a partially stacked CMOS sensor. Our editor, Chris Gampat, who also reviewed the unit at the end of June, remarked on the device’s proficiency. “Combined with the image stabilization in the camera, I was able to shoot photos that I was very proud of,” he wrote about his experiences. A new camera has a better chance of getting picked, especially if a company strategically launches it after a few years than its predecessor. It’s also why many serious photographers purchase a new flagship and only a generation later when they feel the device can’t keep up with their requirements.
If you wonder how Sony made it to the list so many times last time, let us reveal a little secret: the cashback campaign! When the data was being collected between mid- and end-June, Map Camera reported that the Sony a7C II had just been inducted into the campaign, which affected the rankings.
For the unversed, the a7C II is the company’s most affordable full-frame mirrorless, which means that on days of sale, the deal would be worth the hype. Yodobashi Camera also revealed that July was the first time in the past four months that a7C II took the best-selling crown on their list. It remains to be seen where Sony will stand following the end of their campaign.
As we reported earlier, camera sales depend heavily on various factors, including cashback offers, better launches, and even how often one changes one’s device. After all, you won’t spend thousands of dollars on minor upgrades or bumps to the design. However, rankings of such nature only prove which brand remains the best received or trusted by the masses in mirrorless, DSLR, or SLR segments. Despite the month or year, Sony is not ready to lose to anyone (they also dominated the CIPA rankings of 2023 in the same section), which is an excellent reason for other competitors to transcend their performances.
