As a passionate photographer, mastering lighting is important to capturing images that reflect the way I see. While sensor size, lenses, and frames per second are frequently discussed, the true power lies in understanding and utilizing the right LED photography light.
This article is presented in partnership with Hobolite. It was written by Jacob Francois.
The Discovery
Over the years, I’ve experimented with various lighting solutions. However, my search ended when I stumbled upon a YouTube review by Joseph D’Agostino that introduced me to Hobolite. Joseph’s review highlighted the impeccable build quality and attention to detail in their creator kit, and I knew I had to try their studio lighting products.
Upon receiving the Hobolite Pro and Avant, their innovative design and unparalleled control over lighting conditions immediately stood out. Here are the key features that impressed me:
- Exquisite design
- Durability
- Output consistency
- Portability and intuitive design
Real-Life Experiences
My first shoot with my Hobolite lights was at a speakeasy in Center City, Philadelphia. This dimly lit venue was the perfect test for the powerful Hobolite Pro 300W studio light and Avant 100W light, both equipped with long-lasting V-mount batteries. Using continuous lights in this setting eliminated the need for flashes, ensuring a smooth experience for both me and the patrons.
Using the Hobolite Avant and Pro, I immediately noticed how they transformed my workflow. Continuous lighting allowed for seamless adjustments and perfect illumination in challenging environments. After the shoot, I had the opportunity to meet Helena Bian, Hobolite’s CEO. Our conversation was a revelation—not just about the lights but about storytelling and the critical role of lighting in creating compelling narratives.
Helena inspired me to rethink my approach to content creation. Despite modern cameras’ high ISO capabilities, nothing compares to the right studio lighting. This meeting left me motivated and eager to document more of my life through photos and videos.
Since then, the Hobolite Avant has become my go-to for studio sessions and on-the-go photography. Its compact size and compatibility with my existing studio modifiers make it incredibly versatile. Although the Pro is heavier, its build quality and performance are unmatched, making it indispensable for multi-subject shoots.
Community and Growth
Hobolite’s commitment to fostering a creative community is evident. I attended an event co-hosted by Hobolite and Adorama in New York City, led by Jim Sullivan. Held at the Mulberry Bar in Soho, this event offered a welcoming environment to test and learn about Hobolite’s lights. It was here that I had an enlightening conversation with Kiran, who encouraged me to start writing again. Without this event, I wouldn’t be sharing my thoughts with you today.
Hobolite has become an essential part of my photography toolkit. Its precision, versatility, consistency, and portability have revolutionized my approach to studio lighting, enabling me to create more dynamic and impactful images. More importantly, Hobolite has reignited my creative spark, transforming light from a technical necessity into a powerful tool for artistic expression. For any photographer looking to elevate their work, I highly recommend exploring the possibilities that Hobolite’s LED photography lights offer.
