Planning and Patience Are the Keys to Creating Stunning Landscape Pics

If you really want to take your landscape photography to the next level, you need to understand the importance of planning.

Landscape photography is one of the most rewarding genres of photography for a few good reasons. One, you get to be out in nature and fill your lungs with fresh air. Two, it allows you to explore an area and take in all it has to offer. And reason three is that when all elements come together, there can be nothing more stunning than a well-executed landscape picture. Getting to the location of your shoot is only half the battle, though. To create truly stunning images, you need to plan. A recent post on The School of Photography website about why planning is essential when it comes to landscape photography caught our attention. We love landscape photography, and we all regularly employ the recommendations featured in this video. Some of the top tips include scouting out an area, looking for a composition ahead of time, understanding your gear, and knowing which lenses and filters you may need for the shot you want. The video also talks about practicing patience. That last one is perhaps the most challenging part, but waiting for the right time will often yield the best results when it comes to landscape photography.

Landscape photography doesn’t always have to be so cut and dry, though. Remember to get out there and have fun. We have talked in the past about why it is essential to shoot without expectations. Shooting without expectations is good for the soul and helps relieves the stress we put on ourselves to get spectacular shots every time we hit the shutter; it’s also a great way to get to know a new area. When you do this, keeps notes on locations you would like to return to at another time and why you want to go back, and then you can begin planning the shot you wish to get from that location.

The video from The School of Photography is just under 11 minutes long and offers great tips that will serve you well. Along with the tips in this video, we highly recommend an app like the Photographers Ephemeris to help you plan your shots. This app can show exactly how sunlight will fall over any location at any time during the day and will show you exactly where the sun will rise and set. Pull up a chair, grab a cup of your favorite beverage, and learn how to set yourself up for success when it comes to landscape photography.

When I got into this industry years ago, one thing really confused me almost as much as how much certain older photographers tend to treat the younger generation of us: photo vests. I’m completely positive that you’ve all seen them: a photographer of a certain distinguishment (or trying to show off without having said distinguishment) wearing their vests that look a lot like safari vests. You know, almost as if they’re going to go out on an African safari at all times without being anywhere near something like a safari. Walking down the streets doing street photography? You’ll see a photo vest. In the studio? Photo vest! Hiking? Yup, A Photo vest!
