We believe medium format cameras still have their place in street photography. These photographers prove it.
Medium format cameras sure are fun to use. It’s no surprise photographers are out on the street using them on a daily basis. Most opt for a film camera, because, let’s face it, most people don’t have the $10,000 (and then some) to buy digital. The image quality of medium format cameras is awesome, and the novelty is intriguing. After spending some time enjoying the work of some street photographers who are using medium format, we thought, “let’s write an article about it.” So, we did, and here it is: five photographers using a medium format camera for street photography. Enjoy!
1. @olaf_photo
Olaf Sztaba has been a champion of medium format street photography for quite some time. He’s the EIC of Medium Format Magazine, and runs workshops all over the world. He uses a Fujifilm camera to create his high contrast street photographs, and has become a respected member of the street photography community.
2. @dinokuznik

Dino Kužnik could be better described as an urban geometry street photographer. Here at The Phoblographer, we have the mindset that street photographs don’t always need people in them. Because of that, we’re more than happy to include his well-composed street notes on this list. We’re attracted to the beautiful haze in his portfolio, and so are thousands of others. Dino currently sits with 45k followers!
3. @step_hen_les_lie

Stephen Leslie is one of the most knowledgeable, well-presented people in the street photographer community. He’s hilarious as well, often transmuting his sense of humor into his work. He shoots with a range of film cameras, and amongst them is a medium format camera for street photography. Over the years, he has accumulated a body of work that shows all the different personalities across the city of London. It’s fascinating stuff.
4. @pherrillo
This medium format street photographer is a Hasselblad ambassador. With good reason too: his street photography certainly packs a punch and is filled with all the weird and wonderful stories that unfold in the public space.
5. @ray.larose
From street photography to portraits, Ray Larose has put together a beautiful feed. Combing the Hasselblad 501c with Kodak Portra 400, his pastel-influenced images are a joy to spend time viewing. He’s only 39 posts into his Instagram journey, and we’re certainly looking forward to seeing more!
