The Sigma 35mm f1.2 FE will be a great lens if it’s real, but it will be spectacular if it’s not a humongous piece of glass.
Sigma makes some of the best lenses you can get your hands on. But, while the image quality from the lenses will make your jaw drop, the sheer size and weight of some of their primes is almost comical. There are some new reports that the next prime lens from Sigma may be the Sigma 35mm f1.2 FE, and while this has us giddy with excitement, we sure hope it’s not another repeat of the gargantuan 40mm f1.4 DG HSM. Join us after the break for more details.
A recent report over at Sony Alpha Rumors suggests that the next prime lens from the company will be the Sigma 35mm f1.2 FE. Apparently the new glass for Sony Mirrorless cameras will be announced in July 2019, and the lens will be the first from Sigma designed specifically for Full Frame Mirrorless cameras. The Sigma 35mm f1.2 FE (if it actually exists) will also be the fastest lens in the Sigma lineup thanks to the huge aperture of f1.2. The lens will no doubt be spectacular, but we are hoping Sigma manages to keep the size of this lens down.
The Sigma 40mm f1.4 DG HSM is a mighty fine lens. You get outstanding image quality, and the levels of sharpness are off the charts. But you also get to just focus on your legs when you hit the gym due to the sheer size and weight of the lens. The Sigma 28mm f1.4 DG HSM Art was smaller, but still, it had some heft to it.
Other lens manufacturers such are able to keep the size and weight of their lenses down (see the Sony Zeiss 35mm f1.4 for example). There is no reason why Sigma can’t do the same with any potential lens that hits the market unless, of course, big lenses are in their design ethos. One thing is for sure: before you even get close to a camera, you can tell if there is a Sigma lens attached to it. Perhaps that is what Sigma is going for.
Regardless, we’re sure that if the Sigma 35mm f1.2 FE does exist, it will likely be a stellar lens that will fit in-between the 28mm and the 40mm perfectly. Just keep in mind that this lens may need to be partnered with a back brace, or you’ll need to hit the gym before you purchase, especially if it’s the size of the 40mm f1.4. Heaven forbid it to be any bigger. What’s your take on the size and weight of recent Sigma lenses? Is there really a need for a 35mm lens with an aperture of f1.2?
