It’s nice to have options, but the Techart Sony E to Nikon Z lens adapter is a weird one.
Heads up Sony and Nikon users, the news you have been waiting for has just arrived, and we’re sure that after you read this, you’ll be able to sleep soundly tonight. Techart has just announced that they developed a 2mm thin Sony E Mount to Nikon Z mount lens adapter (crickets chirping). The adapter you have all been waiting for is finally here (…more crickets…). Join us after the break to find out more information about the Techart lens mount adapter that nobody asked for.
A recent press release from Techart states that the 2mm thin lens mount adapter will enable Nikon Z6 and Z7 users to use Sony E mount lenses with full autofocus and electronic aperture control features. While the product and its design are indeed feats of engineering (somehow they got a focusing chip in that 2mm thin mount), we can’t help but wonder why it exists.
This Techart mount was apparently very challenging to create as the flange distance of the Nikon Z-mount is only 2mm shorter than Sony E-mount. Techart also had to reverse engineer the autofocusing systems to get this mount to work. So kudos to them for that. That’s a whole lot of work to go into a product that’s only going to cost $249 when it hits stores in late June 2019, but why is it needed?
We’re pretty sure that those of you who have bought a Nikon Z6 or Z7 either have an extensive back catalog of Nikon F mount lenses (and you’re currently adapting those), or you’re going to remain pure to the Z mount system. We know there aren’t many Z mount lenses out just yet, but they will come. As for Sony users, we’re not so sure they would see the point of switching to a Mirrorless camera system that is in its infancy and is honestly quite far behind what Sony offers, only to then have to adapt their lenses that worked flawlessly on the Sony system in the first place. We’re all for having choices, but this one seems a little odd.
It’s worth noting that, as of right now, the Techart Sony E to Nikon Z mount adapter will support lenses from Sony, Tamron, Zeiss, and Sigma. Offerings from Rokinon/Samyang are not currently supported, but should be later on after firmware updates. The Techart lens adapter will also come with a handy dock that will connect to your computer via USB so that the firmware can be updated easily. If the Techart Sony E to Nikon Z mount adapter is something you’re interested in, you can head to their official website, and if you’d like to watch some promo videos of the Techart lens mount in action, you can see them on their YouTube channel. The Techart Sony E to Nikon Z lens adapter will hit shelves late in June 2019 with a price of $249.
