If you’re a fan of Robin Williams and Andy Warhol both, then this is your collectible dream.
Perhaps a one of a kind, there is currently a really rare signed Interview magazine on eBay featuring Robin Williams on the cover and signed by Andy Warhol. The seller, who has a 100% positive rating by more than 600 other folks, has a very interesting story behind how the piece came about. And if you’re both a fan of Andy and Robin (I’m personally a fan of both) then this is something that is very important to you–if you can stomach the price of over $1,000,000. For a vintage antique dating back to over 30 years ago and for something that is really this rare, it’s still pretty easy for one to question the price.
According to the story on the eBay listing:
Quite an interesting story: I am a very big admirer of Mr. Warholâs work. I met Andy shortly before he passed away in 1986 on 47th street in Manhattan while I was having lunch in Diamond Dairy. Mr. Warhol was having a watch repaired in the booth below and I noticed him from the glass windows above. I politely asked him for an autograph, Andy was kind enough to hand autograph his newest edition of Interview magazine for me and he additionally handed me a slip of paper and autographed the plain pad yellow paper which actually contained a note on the back. Apparently he no longer needed the note so he used it to offer me a separate autograph (kind of neat).
Mr. Warhol was incredibly nice, very soft spoken and asked me how I recognized him. I told him it was quite easy as he had a very recognizable look. I mentioned I admired his antique watch and I named the style and year that was on his wrist. He said he usually doesnât sign personal pieces but apparently made an exception. Maybe he too was an admirer of antique watches.
The money will go towards the seller’s family–which they state in the listing. A portion of the sale is going to the charities that Robin Williams supported.
Andy Warhol’s death really shook the photography industry for his creativity and the way that he did things; but Robin Williams’ passing shook the entire art world perhaps even more so due to the fact that he committed suicide. Even typing that sentence was pretty rough.
