Professionals opting to use a Nikon z6 or z7 may want to check out the Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 S.
In what promises to be Nikon’s first really usable zoom lens in Z mount, the Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 S is being billed as an option for the pro who wants to shoot weddings, landscapes, portraits, events, etc. We found its older, f4 variant to be too soft for our liking, and the Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 S has something added to it that is quite interesting. It’s called an ARNEO coating and is designed to cut down on ghosting and flare entering from vertical angles.
Yes, that’s what the press release states:
Additionally, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S is the first NIKKOR lens to feature Nikonâs all-new ARNEO coating: a multi-layer coating that is used in conjunction with Nano Crystal Coating for superior anti-reflective performance. While Nano Crystal Coat suppresses ghosting and flare coming from backlight at diagonal angles, the ARNEO coat compensates for light entering the lens from vertical angles. This expanded field enables the lens to capture exceptional contrast and sharpness even when the light source is visible inside the frame.
Now, I’m not too sure why Nikon really needed to make this coating. Flare is so rare these days and when it comes around it’s often gorgeous. Cutting down too much on it makes image quality way too sterile. But we’re going to have to see how this new coating performs in our review.
The Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 S also includes a new, dedicated manual focus ring independent of the customizable control ring, and has Nikon’s new multi-focus system built into it. In addition to all of this, you’re getting a top LED panel, sort of like what Zeiss makes in their Batis lenses. There is also weather sealing, and for $2,299.95 there had better be.
