If you’re looking for a fast, cheap lens for the EOS R or Nikon Z6/Z7, the Meike 50mm f1.7 has you covered.
Having just been out on the market for a few months, the Canon EOS R and the Nikon Z6 and Z7 don’t have a whole lot of third party, native mount lens support. That changed a little bit today; Meike announced that they have released their 50mm f1.7 manual focus lens for both platforms with native mounts attached. Read on after the break to find out more about this lens.
The Meike 50mm f1.7 lens has been available with a Sony FE mount for a little while now, so it was likely not a big deal for them to attach a new mount to an existing product. This however will likely be a bigger deal to early adopters of Canon’s RF mount EOS R, and Nikon’s Z Mount Z6 and Z7 cameras. As it stands, there are just a handful of native mount lenses available for each platform, so any new lenses will likely be welcomed with open arms.
The Meike 50mm f1.7, which was recently written about at DP Review, is really aimed at portrait photographers. The lens can of course be used for just about anything, and would be great for some street photography and even some landscape work. The lens is a manual focus affair and has an aperture range of f1.7 to f22. The body of the lens is all metal, which is nice as the price point is so low, and it has some degree of weather sealing too. Inside there are six elements in five groups. and it has multi-layer coatings to help keep down flares and chromatic aberration.
While Meike isn’t known for producing the highest quality lenses on the planet, they do provide consumers with very affordable lens options. With the native mount lens markets for the EOS R and Nikon Z cameras still being so sparse, this is a nice addition. For $139 it offers a cheap way for owners of these cameras to try something new.
If you’re in the market for an affordable nifty fifty and don’t want to drop four figures on the Canon RF 50mm 1.2, or significantly more than the price of the Meike on the Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f1.8, this lens may well be for you. There’s no doubt it will likely do a pretty decent job until more first and third party lenses hit the market for both platforms.
The Meike 50mm f1.7 is available on Amazon for both Canon RF and Nikon Z mounts for $139, as well as the Sony FE mount for $109. What do you think about the Meike 50mm f1.7?
