Sigma and their Art Series Prime Lenses have a cult following, thanks to their affordability and performance.
Lots and we mean LOTS, of photographers, were really happy back earlier this year when Sigma announced that they would be releasing a ton of their Art series lenses in the native Sony E Mount. This, finally, meant that Sony A7 series owners could take advantage of Sigma’s well regarded Art Series without the need for an adapter and settling for subpar AF performance. It’s been months now, and many of you have been chomping at the bit for these lenses to be made available, and that day has finally come, with Sigma announcing today the availability of the Sony E mount version of 5 Art prime lenses.
The five lenses now available for Sony E mount that Sigma announced are the Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG HSM, Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG HSM, Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM, Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM, and the Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG HSM. In other words, if you are a Sigma fanboy who loves shooting their primes but has been doing without since switching to Sony – perk up, because you can now get some of their most well-regarded primes for your A7.
But what is the point of these native Sony primes when Sigma already has the MC-11 adapter, you may ask? It is a valid question, but it is also one that Sigma made sure to highlight in their press release. The biggest point, which is crucial to how these lenses perform on the Sony system, is their full compatibility with Sony’s AF systems. The MC-11 does not support Sony’s Hybrid AF or AF-C, these new lenses do. But as well, the performance of each of these lenses was individually tuned to perform well on the Sony system, while an adapted lens has not had that special treatment.
