With the Oberwerth Charlie, you can solve a problem that you didn’t really know existed.

I’m not exactly sure I understand the problem that the Oberwerth Charlie is trying to solve, but it also seems to be catering to the super OCD folks among us. The Oberwerth Charlie is designed for the photographer who, well, honestly according to the press release it doesn’t make sense. They’re billing the Oberwerth Charlie as a camera bag that is messenger style and can by slung around your shoulder whenever you need. Plus it has some gorgeous cowhide leather. But then they’re saying that when you want to use a larger bag, you simply just take out the insert from this bag and put it into the larger one.

In my years of testing camera bags, I’m really trying to understand how that differs from a number of other bags on the market that have removable inserts. In fact, tons of them do because they double for use as a camera bag and then as an everyday bag. This seems to be the same thing, except that they’re expecting you to shell out $199 for it. CHARLIE convinces with versatility and a handy format

The camera bag CHARLIE completes the CASUAL product line of the German bag manufacturer with a format that is especially aimed at minimalists and travel enthusiasts. Handy and compact in its external dimensions, CHARLIE offers space for only the most necessary camera gear: a system camera such as a Leica M, Leica CL, Sony Alpha 6000 or Olympus OMD as well as a corresponding interchangeable lens.

Bag or insert? Both!

CHARLIE is a camera bag and insert at the same time. Handmade from 100% velvety soft, tumbled cowhide leather, the bag can be worn casually over the shoulder or across the body thanks to the length-adjustable, cut-resistant shoulder strap made of close-meshed sewn cotton. A loop on the back allows the bag to be attached directly to the belt.

When the shoulder strap is removed, CHARLIE transforms into an insert and offers safe protection for the equipment in a larger bag or in the holiday suitcase. The outer walls of CHARLIE are softly padded and have a protective effect against knocks and other external influences. An additional interchangeable lens is also well protected by the supplied, individually positionable separation pad. The front compartment under the leather flap offers room for memory cards or small personal items such as a cellphone, passport or some cash. As known from Oberwerth, a LOXX® lock protects the interior from unauthorized opening.

Like all bags from the CASUAL LINE by Oberwerth, CHARLIE is handmade from 100% hand-tumbled southern German cowhide. A sustainable production process, regional ties and a careful attention to detail are values that are reflected in every product of the bag manufacture.
