The Canon M50 and Canon Rebel T7 are two of the company’s latest cameras.
Let me get the less exciting product straight out of the way: the new Canon Rebel T7 is literally the Canon Rebel T6 but with a 24.1MP APS-C sensor. Why? Maybe it’s just Canon trying to find a way to increase profits and not spend a lot of money. But with more megapixels on that sensor, the built in DIGIC 4 processor may struggle to catch up. However, with the new Canon M50, we’re actually seeing a whole lot of new (and in some ways a few strange) things.
Let’s start with the strange: there’s a silent shutter in the camera, but it’s built into a scene mode. That scene mode gives you no control over the exposure but lets you shoot in RAW. Then, there has been a big revamp to Dual Pixel AF–but only some of the lenses will be receiving the most that the system has to offer. With the Canon M50, some lenses won’t be able to use 100% of the camera’s focusing area and will be locked into 99 af points. But when you use other lenses, you’ll instead get access to 143 focusing points.
Most notable though is that there is a brand new RAW format. Canon is changing their format from CR2 to CR3. And what that also means is that the types of RAW files are changing. There is regular RAW and what’s now being called C-Raw. C-Raw is a format between medium and between small raw. You get the same number of pixels in the image but some of the information is stripped away. Why? I’m not sure.
Oh yeah, and the Canon M50 has 4K video. Finally!
