This fashion shoot-out video is a must-watch if you’re caught between the film vs. digital debate.
Let’s face it: the film vs. digital debate isn’t going away anytime soon. People will always have opinions and find something to compare between the two mediums. Preferences will always be put on the table. But, for those who are new to photography – and the question of which is better between the two – here’s a fun video that shows what it’s like to work with both.
Someone who’s just getting started will easily find this comparison useful. But what if you’re far along into your photography? You could be faced with two possibilities. First, you have already decided on most of the details in your work, like your medium and genre of choice. Second, you’re not quite sure if you should try film – for the first time ever or first time in a long time. If it’s the second scenario, you’ve most likely come across film and digital comparisons, both for the resulting photos and the whole shooting process or workflow.
To answer this in their own way, photographers Anita Sadowska and Alex Hutchinson recently did a fun and informative fashion photography shoot-out video. Anita shot digital with her Canon 5D Mk IV, while Alex shot with his analog medium format Pentax 67. Watch how it went down below.
What’s really worth noting in this video is how it clearly shows the actual workflow for both mediums. Anita admittedly shoots a lot of frames for just one outfit, does minimal settings on her camera, and selects the best shots out of the pool to edit later in post-process. Meanwhile, Alex shoots less because each frame costs money with film. He also works with a more slowed down approach, making sure he’s got every camera setting correct so he won’t have to do much if he does post-processing later.
The results for both mediums are beautiful. Both photographers knew how to utilize their tools to create the photos they liked. This fun challenge therefore also shows that, in capable hands, both mediums can make comparable results. It’s just a matter of which process or aesthetics you’re more comfortable with. Oh, and of course, whether you’re doing commercial photography or mostly personal projects.
