Seb Farges has often been a tester for SLR Magic lenses in the early stages. He did it with the 12mm T1.6 and now he is returning and doing it with the 17mm T1.6–a brand new lens that is currently in development. As a refresher and in simplistic terms, a T stop differs from an F stop in that a T Stop is accurately measured to deliver a certain amount of light where as an F Stop is an approximation.
Seb states that it reminds him of the Voigtlander 17.5mm f0.95 that he tested once and that we positively love. He continues to state that, “‘Introductory pre-order pricing SLR Magic 17mm T1.6 CINE lens is available (Spring 2014) is $499 USD or $449 EUR. This is a SLR Magic CINE designation lens and not a HyperPrime lens so it is made for the budget indie filmmaker. It is in the same series as our 35mm T1.4 CINE II lens. Price of the production 17mm T1.6 lens is TBA (to be announced). The SLR Magic CINE 17mm T1.6 will have the same mechanical build as our 35mm T1.4 CINE II lens that repeatable focus.'”
Oddly enough, he tested it on the OMD EM5–which isn’t a camera that one usually shoots video with. Instead, many opt for the Panasonic GH3. Take a look at the video after the jump.
