Analysis: How to Create Better Images for Pinterest

Lots of us love Pinterest! Though it has been stated many a time that it is a social network for women, I really do that men that love the finer things in life (such as bacon, alcohol, the latest in our fashion, portrait inspiration, bacon, more bacon, and more geeky stuff) can also find a soft spot in their heart of the social network. Recently a company named Curalate has been doing some hardcore research into the platform and discovered something shocking in regards to what people love to pin and repin.

Apparently, people love food. Specifically, they cited a particular Paula Deen dessert.

What else you ask? Human faces are a no no. They need lots of colors, a non-distracting background, the image to be portrait style and somehow or another find a way to incorporate red into the image.

So what does this mean besides that people have a serious case of the noms? Well you can use it for your own business. If you’re a wedding photographer, be sure to share images of the cake and the decorations. Maybe have your bride wear red lipstick during the engagement shoot to make things pop a bit more. Make things colorful. As it stands, the Weddings category on Pinterest is huge.

This post is being written around Photokina 2018 and is in regards to a question that’s been quietly popping up amongst press and a number of other folks in the industry: what’s going to happen to Olympus. They’re a company that has been super quiet this year. There have been very few product announcements, their last major innovation was at last Photokina despite releasing some very nice lenses, and they seem to be the company who is sort of left in the dust. What do I mean by this? Well, look at Panasonic. They’re not giving up on Micro Four Thirds; the format in and of itself still has some merit despite what folks may moan about. But Panasonic’s cooperation with Leica and Sigma on the L mount combined with some serious competition for Sony is stealing the show in many ways.

I completely agree with you that in the age of digital photography and mobile phones, the idea of spending a year on just film is really insane. But on the other side of things, I believe that spending a year working with film is one of the best thing that many photographers can do for themselves and their work.
