Hey everyone, I can’t tell you how stoked I am to be welcoming Larry Colen to the website. He’s a really smart photographer that takes great photos, has lots of fruitful advice, and will be the new Features Editor here at The Phoblographer. Please join me in giving him a warm welcome.
Apart from a few photos with his father’s Spotmatic, Larry started in photography with an Argus C3 and a summer school photo class in the summer between 7th and 8th grades. Shortly thereafter, he got a Minolta SRT-101 and he and his father set up a darkroom at their house. By the time he graduated college, he no longer had access to a darkroom, and for most of the next 25 years his attention was focused on a myriad of other hobbies including sports car racing, dancing, aikido, historical recreation and playing silicon valley roulette at a host of startups.
In November 1997 he bought a Pentax K100Ds, to last him a couple of years until he could afford a camera with the performance he wanted, and suddenly found himself fully immersed in photography again. Living in the Santa Cruz mountains, in California, he just needs to walk into his yard to find things to photograph, but enjoys almost all sorts of photography.
