Earlier tonight, we got the chance to play with the brand new Sony 85mm f1.8 FE and the new Sony 100mm f2.8 STM FE G Master. Both lenses performed absolutely wonderfully, but if I really had to put my money on one or the other, I’d personally lean more towards the 85mm. To be fair, I spent most of my time with this lens, and if I spend more time with the 100mm f2.8 then my opinion may change. But I’m a far bigger fan of 85mm focal lengths than 100mm.

These sample photos are shot with the Sony a7r II, the 85mm f1.8 and Sony’s new HV-45 flash. The flash, when working with the wireless transmitter is pretty good. But Sony’s 85mm is whats really impressing me. I wanted the Zeiss Batis for a while, but I was holding out on the purchase. I seriously am thinking when I get the right amount of funding that the Sony 85mm f1.8 FE is exactly what I need.
What I want is the 85mm G Master. But I understand I’m a mere mortal with the typical millennial-in-his-30’s income. The lens is fantastic, but I need to test it on the Sony a7 or Sony a7 II. That camera line was and still is always my favorite. It’s not too much and not too little.
If anything, I want Sony to return to CCD sensors to give me the look of chrome film and give me better low ISO settings than what we’ve seen so far. Here are some sample photos. They were shot in RAW and converted straight in Capture One 10.

Sony’s new G Master lens is also highly capable of delivering really beautiful photos. Though considering the light gathering abilities, I’d say this lens needs a lot of natural light or flash output. I’ll be spending more time with it sooner or later.
