SILINA’s Sensor Curving Technology Hopes to Speed up Industry Usage

“SILINA does not reinvent the wheel of sensor design and manufacturing”, states SILINA’S CTO Wilfred Jahn, “but is developing technological solutions to curve existing (flat) imaging sensors.” A PhD holder in Electro-optical System Design, Wilfred forms one half of SILINA’s co-founding team with CEO Michael Bailly. Seeing a potential increase in demand among technological sectors, the duo formed SILINA in 2020 with a vision to reform the existing sensor ‘curving process’.

A Curved Sensor Could Make This 70mm Canon Lens Tiny

High megapixel sensors are great; however, a curved sensor would really spice up the camera market.

We love finding out about new sensors just as much as you do. However, new types of sensors have been hard to come by. Sure, Sony is killing it with their stacked sensors, but there needs to be a big leap technologically. There has been plenty of speculation about global shutters. These would be very cool. Still, recently there has been a lot of noise about curved sensors. Curved sensors would drastically reduce the size of lenses as they would allow for much simpler lens designs. Speaking of lens designs, Canon just filed a patent for a new lens. That’s doesn’t sound too exciting. However, this lens is designed for a curved sensor. Let’s talk about it after the break.

Canon and Toshiba Join Sony with Curved Sensor Tech Patents

In the world of digital photography sensors, technology has steadily improved over the years with various advances mostly taking place within the confines of standard CMOS sensors. Fujifilm and Panasonic have an organic sensor they have been working on, and Sony patented a curved sensor design a while back.

Well, Toshiba and Canon have jumped on the curved sensor design bandwagon, joining Sony. The patents from the two companies both approach the curved sensor design differently, but both have the same goal, to improve image quality and eliminate things like vignette from images captured by these devices.

New Sony Patent Describes Curved Full Frame Sensor That Soaks Up More Light

Sony Alpha Rumors is reporting on a new patent that features a Curved Full Frame Sensor. Sound familiar? It should. Sony has had this patent for a while, and they keep begin associated with the rumored RX2. But a new patent also shows that this curved sensor will work with lenses that are not only smaller, seemingly have a slower aperture. However, due to the curve and some weird rules of physics, the sensor will let in more light.

When it comes to the full frame game, SAR cites:

29.96mm f/2.06 (likely to become a 30mm f/2.0)
36mm f/1.85 (likely to become a 35mm f/1.8)
36mm f/2.85 (likely to become a 35mm f/2.8)
36mm f/2.26 (likely to become a 35mm f/2.0)

Now this means that the lenses will be a bit smaller than they normally would be, but it’s interesting how it all works. Sony Alpha Rumors also describes it for smaller sensor if it indeed happens.

Sony RX2 Reported to Sport a Faster 35mm f1.8 Lens and a Curved Sensor

When Sony first announced the RX1, it truly turned the photographic world around, as it was the first fixed-lens compact camera to sport a full-frame 35mm sensor and a fixed 35mm f2 Carl Zeiss lens. A little later, Sony updated the camera with the RX1R, which had basically the same specs as the RX1, but came without an anti-aliasing filter on top of the sensor for improved sharpness.

The internet has been busy speculating on the RX1(R)’s successor’s details for a while, but now Photo Rumors reports that the camera, which might be called the RX2, will come with a faster 35mm f1.8 lens and–more importantly–a new curved sensor. Sony’s curved sensor technology had been reported earlier, but now a patent has been discovered that shows a 35mm f1.8 lens designed specifically for a just such a sensor.
