For a budding photographer, or even an experienced one, a common question is how much to charge for your products; like prints, canvas, albums etc. This is not information that can be easily researched and a ton of the information that you can find is behind a paywall of some kind as part of a workshop. Furthermore, a lot of the information is very contradictory of other information that may be found, and this can make it really difficult for any photographer to make an informed decision on what to charge.
So what is a photographer to do? Well, usually it involves a sort of trial and error process of setting prices and constantly tweaking them until you hit a sweet spot. This is not an ideal solution and causes lots of sales and income being left on the table, so today we want to share with you the better way – the Shootproof way.
If you have never heard of Shootproof, they are an online gallery and proofing service that hosts online galleries of images for photographers, complete with the ability for clients to purchase prints from the gallery (if the photographer wishes). Shootproof recently published a blog post in which they unveiled the results of their data analysis – which looked at the price of purchased prints on their service. Hundreds of thousands of online sales were analysed and condensed into the infographic you see below:
The information is really helpful to anyone looking to see where they stand, and make a decision on where they want to be in the market. Now, it needs to be noted that online sales do differ from in-person sales, so that needs to be taken into account if you plan to use this information to help guide your pricing overall. But even still, the information is helpful regardless thanks to it being based on real, hard numbers, not opinions or one photographers experience.
In addition to the infographic above, Shootproof announced that they have added these baseline prices into their service, so any photographer who starts a new pricelist on the site will be able to reference this information (even more of it than is on the infographic too) to help them get their prices in a good place.
Shootproof offers a free account, so you can signup and give it a try – even if just to take a look at the additional pricing data. If you are interested, you can find all that information, here.
