The Lomomatic 110 Discomatic is Bound to be Disappointing

In bed first thing this morning, I looked at my inbox and let out a bit of a sigh. Lomography has introduced their latest 110 camera variant: the Lomography Lomomatic 110 Discomatic. As I typed that, I truly wonder why they couldn’t have just named it the Lomomatic Disco. Beyond the fun marketing, the camera is bound to be disappointing.

What to Know About the Lomography Lomomatic 110 Discomatic?

The new Lomography Lomomatic 110 Discomatic is a color variant of the company’s Lomomatic 110 camera, and it in fact shares the same specs. Here are those tech specs:

Of course, Lomography isn’t a company that’s all about specs. Instead, it’s about the charm and the experience. And in this case, it’s essentially just a 110 Film point and shoot camera. Great in case you want to have a different experience — but then you realize that 35mm cameras can pretty much do the same things but better. The Lomomatic, for example, has quirks that I’m sure Lomography would say is charm.

But realistically, the target market of this camera is the human equivalent of young adult frogs living in a well who believe that they’ve seen the whole sky. Those new tadpoles, who only just got their legs, don’t realize the whole world of 110 cameras out there.

Why So Sad?

In March 2024, I purchased the Lomomatic 110 metal variant. And it took me over a year to complete the review. Usually when this happens, it’s because I’m dragging my feet on doing it because, well, I probably didn’t like it. And indeed, that’s the case. On the Film advancement process, I stated, “You elongate the camera, shoot, and then collapse it fully and reopen it to advance the film,” the review says. “It’s a very fun and tactile experience but it gets kind of annoying after a while. And when you have to get through an entire roll of film, you start to lose will.”

The new Lomomatic 110 Discomatic is the same camera as the metal variant, but with more of a plastic fantastic experience.

It’s easy to think that I’m getting older at 39 and therefore burned out if you’re a capitalist consumerist. But on the other side of the mirror, I see a man that’s tried it all, has the experience, and is just so sick of a brand that doesn’t get it together.

The camera looks cool for sure. After nearly two whole decades of reviewing Lomography’s cameras though, I’ve ultimately concluded that they’re little more that fashionable pieces more than anything truly functional even in the hands of capable photographers. The one real exception to that statement is the Lomography LCA-120; which I still regret giving away to this day. Lomography has never made a camera as good as that.

I’m not calling this camera in for review. And if you’re considering watching Youtube or Social Media reviews, I’d carefully consider the relationship that Lomography has with that channel.

What Lomography could’ve done instead is made a different variant of this camera in either 35mm or even 120 film. Truly, why haven’t they made a half-frame 120 camera?
