After a long break, the Phoblographer has decided to start featuring photographers again as part of our regular publishing schedule. In light of this news, we’ve revamped our standards on publishing photography projects. No generative AI can be used, only assistive AI. And in addition to that, we’re looking to feature photography projects are really lend themselves to the human way of doing things — and that cannot be easily duplicated by AI at all. We’re not against AI, I mean, I’m a high functioning blind man who uses it when I need to. But we’re against humans being replaced. You can find all the details of how to apply to be featured here.
If you’re newer to the Phoblographer, I welcome you. For most of the website’s lifetime, we were known as an arts publication. Sure, we reviewed gear, but there was a moment when most of the site’s traffic came from us featuring photographers.
With the state of social media, Google, AI search, and social news aggregators, we’re leaning into doing what we want even more.
Galleries, indie book sellers, etc: please note that if you want your photographers featured, they must apply to be featured using our format linked here.
We all here often have conversations about how we still believe in how humans who tap into their potential, don’t give away their secrets, etc. And in these photography features, we’re not asking photographers to give away their secrets. But we are indeed asking you to not use generative AI.
I’m currently writing this as Phoblographer and our partners moves closer to the first 5 Boro Foto Fest and we are here to help give photographers the tools and knowledge to build their own rafts and ark in the face of what’s coming. For years, I’ve been warning photographers about Unsplash and all that it was going to do to the photography world. But many didn’t pay attention at all.
Folks, we need to do this before it’s too late. Because I respect other artists, I will not copy and paste his poem, but I encourage you to read The Problem with Early Warnings by Charles Rafferty. It can be read here at the Slowdown. And it’s very important that we all pay attention to these words.
