Infrared photography has been popular amongst photographers. It allows image-makers to capture light that the human eye is unable to see, thereby resulting in photographs that appear quite surreal. While there are various ways one can invest in infrared photography, some can be a bit expensive, since they need you to replace the sensor itself. However, OM System seems to have come up with a solution for this, which allows one to achieve the same at a fraction of the cost.
According to OM System’s post, the company has designed a new infrared system that uses near-infrared light. In other words, the company utilizes its own mirrorless camera, and has the ability to shoot 80MP images with the camera. The image processing happens inside the device, which means you do not rely on other factors as such.
The company uses three models for IR photography: the OM-1 Mk II, the E-M1 Mark III, and the OM-D E-M1X. The E-M1 Mark III has the lightest body and comes with the brightest lens as well, 12-40mm f2.8 PRO. The other two cameras come with 12-45mm f4 PRO. The specification for each camera is identical to the original, including weather sealing for each.

So, how is OM System achieving this? They have designed a magnetic detachable filter that allows one to switch between IR and normal photography. This is not the first time an IR filter has been used to create images. In fact, OM System only caters for this industry and research fields. This includes uncovering brushstrokes and sketches beneath oil paintings for authenticity investigations in forensics, amongst other things.

There are infrared filters on the market, and so, one can easily achieve similar results with the existing set of cameras they have. However, those who are using OM System devices must take notice, as there is a possibility that they may get distinct, creative results with what the company offers. OM Systems approach means you can take your camera out even in rain. And, with 80MP composite images, landscape photographers will enjoy the most.
With more and more photography becoming a bit mundane, OM System should launch n infrared filler for those who want to create fine art images. The company is anyway, catering to outdoor photographers, with the EM1 Mk III being an interesting model to work with. As we said in our review:
So who should buy the Olympus OMD EM1 III? Landscape photographers who want a lighter rig should totally do so. Travel photographers who want unique image quality also qualify. Wildlife photographers that need durability and are holding out for some new firmware updates will love the Olympus OMD EM1 III.
OM System has always introduced something special for photographers, so a camera or an accessory that can aid fine art photography will only help the company to branch out more.
