Nikon’s move to mirrorless cameras has seen the company rise to new heights. The company has launched exceptional cameras and lenses, with some examples being the Zf, the Z9, and the Nikon 50mm f1.4 Z. However, its base was created with Nikon DSLR cameras and the F series lenses. The latter lenses have been quite popular, and it now appears that the company has discontinued many of them. Here is a quick look.
According to Nikon Rumors, the company has discontinued a variety of lenses, ranging from wide-angle to super-telephoto. Most of the lenses were created over a decade ago, with a few launched more recently:
- AF-S Nikkor 35mm f1.4 G – Launched in September 2010
- AF-S Nikkor 300mm f4 E PF ED VR – Launched in January 2015
- AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5-6.3 G ED VR – Launched in August 2016
- AF-P DX Nikkor 10-20mm f4.5-5.6 G VR – Launched in May 2017
- AF-P Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 E ED VR – Launched in July 2017
- AF-S Nikkor 120-300mm f2.8 E FL ED SR VR – Launched in September 2019
At the beginning of the month, we reported AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f4.5-5.6G ED VR has also been discontinued recently. As we said then, this is not surprising since the company considering the company already entirely focused on mirrorless lenses. With time, the production of newer lenses and cameras will be completely halted to focus on the mirrorless lineup. Some of the replacements for the lenses above include:
- Nikkor Z 35 mm f1.8 S
- Nikkor Z DX 12-28 mm f3.5-5.6 PZ VR
- Nikkor Z 100-400 mm f4.5-5.6 VR S
- Nikkor Z DX 50-250 mm f4.5-6.3 VR
- Nikkor Z 120-300 mm f2.8 TC VR S
- Nikkor Z 400 mm f4.5 VR S
Each of the newer lenses builds on the older ones. Since it has been only six years since we first saw Nikon’s mirrorless camera, more is yet to come. If you are still using a Nikon DSLR camera, you can find these offerings on Amazon or eBay. However, if you are planning to buy a camera for yourself, you can consider Nikon’s mirrorless offering. They will continue to build their lenses with time, and the lineup will get better with time.
