Could 2025 be the year that the point and shoot camera really finally returns? Well, the hint that we’re getting this year is the Nikon Coolpix P1100. Being announced today, the camera is a superzoom with a small sensor that’s designed for folks who want a camera with a whole lot of zoom power and not a lot of weight. When we say a lot of zoom power, Nikon claims 125x the optical zooming capabilities. But what does that actually mean?
According to PCMag, an established and long-standing institution, optical zoom has to do with the zoom that’s provided by the lenses instead of software. The software zoom is the same as cropping an image from its whole frame. But the optical zoom is similar to using a magnifying glass on something. “The higher the optical zoom, the better the results,” stated PCMag. “In a still camera, an optical zoom of 10x or more is called a ‘superzoom’ lens. Note that if a still camera is advertised with ’10x zoom,’ that does not necessarily mean optical zoom only. In many cases, the optical is 3x with the additional 7x being digital.” This is a marketing strategy that manufacturers of cameras and phones have used for years.
This camera is obviously designed for someone traveling that doesn’t want the technical insanity that interchangeable lens cameras can present to you. Not long ago, a friend’s wife went on a six-month-long cruise and wanted a superzoom camera. This would’ve been perfect for her. There are also lots of other types of photo-loving folks who’d love this:
- Birders: often, birders reach for binoculars and don’t take pictures. But a camera like this could let them do both. Here in NYC, there are species that come and go with the seasons. And they’re usually documented and shared amongst the birding community.
- Sports lovers: If they’ll let you walk into the arena with this camera, you’ll have a lot of fun.
- Stargazers: Those who love looking at constellations and more would adore this camera’s zoom capabilities.
