It appears that compact cameras, in every shape and size, are now gradually making a massive comeback. We reported earlier that companies are unable to see the future of compact cameras, with Fujifilm, Nikon, Canon, and Sony seeming to be sitting on a sleeping treasure. I guess they heard us or the demands of the young users, who are no longer too keen on mirrorless cameras. With varied reports around, it appears that some companies are ready to change their plans, with Canon being one of the few to launch two compact cameras this year. And the Canon SX70 HS is one of the cameras that could see a successor.
The Canon SX70 HS Successor
To recap our earlier reports, Canon has the perfect lineup that needs revitalization: the iconic PowerShot series. After multiple distinct launches, the first being in 1996 with the PowerShot 600, the company earned the respect of various photographers, including serious enthusiasts who wanted a smaller device. Now, Canon is reportedly working on a whole new lineup, the V1, which could be released as early as Q1 or Q2.
And now, according to Canon Rumors, the company is set to launch yet another compact camera, which is going to be the successor of the SX70 HS. For the unversed, the camera is actually designed for travel, wildlife, and bird photography. Some of its specs include:
- 1/2.3-inch 20.3MP sensor
- 65x optical zoom (21mm – 1365mm, 35mm equivalent)
- 0.99 cm, 2.36 million dot OLED EVF
- 5 stops image stabilization (IS)
- DIGIC 8 image processor
- 4K 30p movie recording

It is likely that the successor of the camera is going to follow in its footsteps. While it may still have a 1-inch sensor, there is a chance the company will try to make it slightly different, especially something that can cater to both photographers and videographers. We do hope that the device is not only limited to the content creator’s needs but is actually something that can be worthwhile for enthusiasts who want to travel light. In addition, Canon Rumor adds this time, which can go the good or the bad way.
Guess What the Price Will Be
If you are wondering why Canon is so keen on a fixed-lens ultra-telephoto camera, the answer somewhere is in its demand. On eBay, the SX70 HS, which was launched in 2018, can cost anywhere between $400 to $1,000, depending on the device’s usage. However, for people asking anything over $500 is kind of odd for a camera like this. Why? Because the sensor is just 1/2.3-inch. So, even if you get a massive zoom range, remember your aperture will also increase, leading to less light.
However, when one compares Canon to other options like Nikon’s P1000 or Sony’s RX10 IV, then you do realize that Canon is offering a cheaper alternative. Both Sony and Nikon cameras are closer to $1000 or more, while the humble SX70 HS was just $699. Sure, there is a shortcoming in terms of telephoto length, which the Nikon gives; you do have to weigh the odds. Will the extra $300 be worth that Zoom? After all, the sensor is still very small.
When Will it Come?
At the moment, the camera is set to launch in the second half of 2025. However, it will compete with Nikon’s latest launch, the P1100, which is available for $1099. We must also remind you that the worst camera of the 2024 title went to Canon. So, it is pretty evident that Canon has a lot to lose. By launching a bridge camera for photography enthusiasts, Canon may prove that they still care for the medium.
