We just wrote about why Canon’s Powershot lineup needed a modern revamp. Well, it looks like Canon has been planning something along these lines, as a new report suggests they just might be about to do the same this year. The PowerShot V series is all set to be the new compact camera segment in Canon’s lineup.

Canon’s Powershot series has been among its most successful digital cameras in recent times. Launched in 1996 with the Powershot 600, the most recent release was the G5X MK II in 2019. After this, Canon appeared to focus more on the M-mount instead. However, this insipid lineup was soon forgotten by Canon fans and the photography world in general as it failed to live up to its potential. And although Canon did release the Powershot V10 in 2023, no serious photographer worth his salt would even consider this as a camera for photography. Does the now-aging Powershot lineup need a refresh? In an era when people are reaching for early 90s digital compact cameras thanks to TikTok fads, Canon could do well to cash in on this craze. And a new report suggests that they are about to launch something on these lines
What Does The Report Say
According to CanonRumors, the Canon Powershot series of compact digital cameras will be refreshed in 2025. We might see this camera as early as Q1 or Q2. They claim it will be called the Canon Powershot V1. I sincerely hope it’s not going to be anything remotely in form or shape like the Powershot V10 (seen below). Compact as this may be, it’s not something that would kindle the spirit of photography in purists and enthusiasts. Plus, it appears to be marketed more for vloggers than photographers

If Canon decides to go back to the stylish designs that the Powershot series became popular by, such as the Powershot A20 seen below, then it could very possibly rival compacts from brands like Fujifilm and OM System (who we really wish would bring out the PEN-F 2 already). These early Powershot cameras, and the ones that came down the line, combined portability with advanced features, appealing to casual users and photography enthusiasts. They were compact and lightweight bodies, while the well-thought-out ergonomic layouts ensured comfortable handling.

Possible Tech Specs
If the new Powershot series by Canon has to be a hit, it doesn’t just need to take styling cues from the cameras it’s succeeding, it also needs to be packed with leading technological features. According to the report, this is what we can expect to see in the Powershot V1:
- 24MP CMOS Sensor
- A 16-50mm (35mm Equivalent) lens
- 3″ Screen (Approx 1 million pixels) LCD with a 170° viewing angle
- 4K Video
- 1.4X Crop Mode for Stills
- RAW, C-RAW, Dual Pixel RAW
- H.265 / HEVC
- C-Log3 / HDR PQ
There’s no mention of the sensor size, but if it has to compete with Fujifilm’s XE-4, XM-5, or even the X100VI, they’d better have at least an APS-C sensor in there.

Leading with the Powershot V1, Canon can slowly launch a series of pocket cameras to cash in on the recent compact camera craze. And they can probably do a far better job at it than the recent attempt by Yashica. And I sincerely hope it doesn’t go down the ill-fated route of Nikon’s DL line. If all goes well, this new camera might be close to what our Editor-in-Chief, Chris Gampat, hoped to see in the Canon G1x Mk IV. You can read his heartfelt article on that topic here.
