Large format may be a niche genre, but it still is one of the beloved forms of photography for many. Over the years, many large format photographers have used self-made or DIY devices. However, those who did not want to create their own large format device had a few options, such as Ondu Eikan, a Kickstarter campaign 4×5 camera, or the Intrepid Camera. Adding to this now gradually growing list is Smartflex, an innovative 4×5 SLR camera that is now heading to the production stage.

The team behind the creation is HuaTong Zhang and Zhuoyao Chen from China, both of whom have experienced repeated shortcomings of traditional large format cameras, particularly the Graflex RB. As avid photographers, they had to find a solution to their woes. After years of research, the result is the Smartflex SLR 4×5 camera. What makes the camera so interesting is that it’s a highly portable, durable, and versatile tool for large format photography, one could say an antithesis of what they had been using.
So, what does it offer? Inspired by the Bronica D camera, the device has a segmented mirror system to help with short-flange distance lenses of 180 mm. To help with additional light, the large format camera offers flash synchronization. It has been created and constructed from lightweight German 3D printing materials to tackle its weight. Thanks to carbon fiber and CNC-machined aluminum alloy components, the device is also durable. It has been designed for maximum performance and a minimal weight of 2150g.

One of its significant attributes is the Smartnon 178mm f2.5 lens, which Zhang and Chen developed specifically for the camera. The lens can emulate classic Dallmeyer lenses’ similar look and feel while delivering smooth bokeh transitions, sharp areas when in focus, and moderate color contrast. Furthermore, the lens has an optical center near the lens board, allowing for perfect infinity focus—a significant improvement over traditional large-format systems. Furthermore, the combination of the lens and camera makes it ideal for portrait photography.
Smartflex has a high-brightness focusing screen, allowing users to compose their frame in dimly lit areas. A built-in Depth of Field (DOF) system will allow photographers to capture cinema-esque photographs with their phones, as it offers enhanced control over the focus and exposure. Lastly, the large format device features Bluetooth that can help control the shutter via smartphones for even greater convenience.
For those wanting to use instant film, the Smartflex can also be utilized with Fujifilm Instax prints. All one has to do is adjust the focus screen from 4×5 film mode to Instax Wide mode. Thus, you can make film photographs and Instax prints for yourself. If you wish to change careers, you can purchase a Smartflex SLR 4×5 camera and lens for $2,900. However, the same bundle will be available for $3,400 after the campaign ends. The latter price bump reflects the hard work and investment the team has made in developing this camera.
Large format photography is a great way to test the analog waters. It will teach you patience and realign your vision. In a digital age, this style of photography can be very cathartic, as it teaches you to move beyond making images for social media. The price is steep, but again, it is unlike the other devices. So, slow down, savour your frame, and when you do make a picture, it will be unlike anything you have shot before.
