Nature has always played a significant role in humankind’s evolution. Yet, despite its years of nurturing, we tend to raze it for our capitalist gains over its preservation for our personal well-being. However, time and time again, visual artists have reminded us of our continuous loss, with artworks highlighting the intimate bond between us and the natural world. Photographers, too, have taken on the role of activists, some outright and others subtly, reminding us of these relations. As part of this continuous discourse, The Gallery at Leica Store San Francisco presents a new group exhibition, which will further add layers to the larger picture.

Titled Interwoven, the exhibition examines the connection between humans and the natural environment through the works of four renowned photographers: Paul Cupido, Cig Harvey, Jeffrey Conley, and Pentti Sammallahti. Leica looks at the photographers, each with a distinct voice, to offer a unique perspective on nature’s influence on our lives. In a way, the show offers a reflection of our interactions with the environment and how we continue to shape it today.

In Paul Cupido’s vivid photographs, the lines between imagination and reality are blurred, which urges viewers to contemplate and reflect on the fleeting nature of our existence. By removing excess details, we are left to see the beauty of nature in all its hues and colors. Cig Harvey, on the other hand, offers a poetic depiction of human relationship with landscapes. Using darker tones, she creates an intimate and sensory experience for viewers to ponder over how much nature has given us. Unlike the previous names, Jeffery Conley captures black-and-white portraits of landscapes, whose play of shadow and light showcases a serene, meditative quality of the natural world. Pentti Sammallahti, another monochromatic photographer, uses photography to document the connection between humans, animals, and their environment to illustrate the unity that binds us together.

The four photographers weave a tale to remind us of our intricate and enduring bond with Earth. Thus, the showcase offers a deeper understanding of our shared existence with nature, guiding us with a new sense of awe, respect, and gratitude for the environment that sustains us.

In addition to Interwoven, Leica is also hosting a talk by Peter Fetterman, a gallery founder and photography collector. With over four decades of experience, this figure will speak to the audience, share his journey as a collector, and delve into the medium’s power. This session will also include a discussion on Fetterman’s 2022 book The Power of Photography, which is a compilation of 120 photographs from his personal collection that spans the 20th century. The book depicts photography’s ability to shatter cultural barriers and evoke universal emotions, making it a vital tool for connection and understanding.
The showcase is a wonderful event, especially for those who want to document the environment in a unique way. At the same time, the talk is the perfect opportunity for emerging photographers to understand the significance of visual arts. Attending both is likely to benefit your journey in the long run.
Interwoven will be on display from January 27 to March 29. Head to the Leica Store in San Francisco on January 30 to attend the talk and the opening reception. For more information, visit The Gallery’s website.
