They’re no strangers to the macro genre, currently having over a dozen macro lens models in their lineup. However, these two lenses from Laowa are unique as they’re the first full-frame mirrorless tilt-shift macro lenses to be released by the brand. Coming in at 55mm and 100mm focal lengths (at f2.8), they both feature a tilt of ±10°, shift of ±12mm, and a 1:1 magnification.

Bravo Laowa
Laowa claims that these are the first tilt-shift macros featuring an f2.8 aperture designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras. However, they aren’t limited to full-frame cameras alone. Due to their large image circle, they can also be used on Fujifilm GFX medium-format cameras and are available in this mount option, too. However, they are limited to ±8mm shift and ±10mm tilt on these cameras. Aside from this, you can also order them in Sony FE, Nikon Z, Canon RF, and L mount versions.

Laowa makes some exceptional lenses. We know their quality-to-price ratio is far greater than what most other 3rd party lens manufacturers these days offer. And their macro lenses can really hit the image quality out of the park. The Laowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro narrowly missed out on getting our Editor’s Choice Award. In our review of this lens, we said:
“The Laowa 90mm f2.8 2x is ideal for photographers who want exceptional close-ups. Where 1:1 and 1:2 is the norm, this lens has a level of close-up abilities that’s difficult to match. The creamy bokeh and dreamy rainbow flare are also an ideal fit for photographers craving character on a modern camera body.”
Dual Benefit Lenses
While there are more than a handful of their macro lenses to choose from, these new releases are unique as they are the only tilt and shift capable macro options from the brand. To see exactly how the tilt feature can assist macro photography, take a look at my review of the AstrHori 85mm macro lens which sported the same capability.

Tilting the focal plane with a tilt-shift lens isn’t just about getting things in focus—it’s about control. You can keep specific areas sharp without stopping down the aperture too much. This then means you still get that much-needed depth of field while maintaining focus where it counts. For reflective surfaces like jewelry, these lenses are a game-changer. They help minimize unwanted reflections and focus on the sparkle that matters.

Of course, the shift feature comes in handy when doing architectural photography, helping keep verticals vertical. Although I think the 100mm version would be a bit too tight for this, the 55mm version might come in handy for photographers of this genre.

Wedding photographers can also devise creative ways to use these lenses, such as in the example illustrated above. Thanks to these lenses, selectively blurring out areas of the frame in ways that were previously only achieved in post-processing can now be done straight in the camera.

Food and product photographers, too, would find this lens something that could be added to their arsenal. All mount versions of the 55mm and 100mm Laowa Tilt-shift 1X macro lenses are currently available for USD 1249.
Who Could Really Rock These Lenses

Tilt-shift lenses are often misunderstood as tools specifically for architectural perfectionists. But they’re so much more than that, especially when paired with macro capabilities. This kind of lens isn’t just gear; it’s a gateway to a level of creative control that’s often inexperienced for most amateur photographers. Imagine shooting a perfectly arranged, delicious-looking dish with every corner of the frame looking shared. The ability to control the plane of focus and perform micro-adjustments to elevate your shot from wow to absolutely stunning. No more bracketing and layering tens of shallow depth-of-field photos. Then there’s shift, which doesn’t just correct perspective but empowers it. In product photography, where distortion is your enemy, this feature is a must-have. And it also lets you experiment with creating perfectly parallel compositions or explore creative framing without ever moving your camera.
Think of these lenses as a season ticket to your favorite amusement park. Year-round fun awaits you with no time limits once you get your hands on one of these. You could also consider them the perfect tool for your already brimming bag of expert lenses, helping you fine-tune your craft even further and with ease. These Laowa lenses can give your images more control and more freedom to push your creative boundaries.
