Those who miss the warm colors of beach sunsets will adore these photos from the GuruShots Beach Days contest.

The beach is a wonderful place to shoot photos–especially long exposures. The views from above, using drones and black and white, can be wonderful. But most of all, some of the best shots we’ve seen are from the Golden Hour. GuruShots just finished their latest photo challenge and we’re ready to present the winners. For the best viewing experience, we recommend that you grab a cup of coffee and scroll through the images on your desktop. Or curl up with your laptop, sit back, and take in these shots.

Ronald M. (Outsiders), Germany – Top Photographer

Ronald M has the top image. It’s a long exposure that blends oranges, purples, and lines altogether. This photo reminds me of a surreal, calm time that I only dream of. How many times have you gone to a beach and experienced no one around? I don’t know about you, but I love it. Something about waterfronts always bring a sense of inner serenity to me. And this one does just the same. The long exposure shows a number of moments in time and complete silence. Ronald’s work provides a window into this world. Congrats, Ronald. This entry into the GuruShots Beach Days contest is stellar.

Kirsty Morrell, Australia – Top Photo

Kirsty Morrell has the top photo from Australia. There’s a lot to say about this image:

  • The color palette reminds us of a painting
  • The path looks incredibly inviting
  • The smooth tones make us want to be there right now
  • The composition shows us a path that looks like incredibly warm water. And who doesn’t want that?
  • Look at that water! It’s stunning!

Personally speaking, Kirsty’s photo is one I’d love to hang in my office.

Laura Zahm, United States – Guru’s Top Pick

Some of you may know of my weakness for black and white photos. And this one from Laura Zahm is absolutely one of my favorites. We typically think of the beach as a place with lots of beautiful color. But when you use black and white in a photo, you have to rely on tones and shapes. That’s what Laura is doing. I typically see beach photos shot in black and white if they’re on film or shot with pinholes. And this is the rare exception. It’s stellar, and the balance is wonderful.

We thank you all for entering the GuruShots Beach Days contest. The beach is a beautiful place to make photos. With the right tools, you can create better photos any time of the day or night. Some of the most fun I’ve had is with doing Live Composites on a beach at night. Cloudy skies can add a ton of drama to scenes like this.
