Unsplash has been polarizing the Industry and Zack Arias weighs in! (feature image screenshot from video, credit to Zack Arias)
Internet rants about bad ideas, horrible policies, and just plain old drama are not uncommon these days. But let’s be honest, there are a ton of reasons for this, and chief among them is there simply are a lot of things worth ranting about out there. Take Unsplash for example, the image sharing website where photographers are sharing high-resolution imagery royalty free (ie giving away their work for free). It has been polarizing the photo world; some think it has a purpose, and others view it as a scourge on the industry.Zack Arias, a long time educator, and name in the Industry, has just posted his thoughts on Unsplash. But this isn’t just any online rant about what one person thinks is a bad idea. Arias took the time to learn more about the platform, he even interviewed one of its co-founders, all in an effort to really understand it before he ripped it to shreds.
Well, as you could imagine – even after his research Arias was not impressed, and in this video, he goes through the entire idea behind Unsplash. So if you are unfamiliar with Unsplash, this video will not only be helpful because it will inform you about what it is and what it is trying to do, but it will also point out the reasons why Arias finds it to be a problem for the industry.
We aren’t kidding either. This is a very long, very detailed video. Coming in at about 42 minutes, you will probably need to have a look at this one in parts. But really, this is probably the most complete and thorough look at Unsplash from a pro or against perspective: it just happens to be an opinion against it.
