When it comes to purchasing a point and shoot camera, the most one can think of spending is a few hundred dollars. But what happens when people want to buy a whole set in one go? And would it even make sense to buy a dozen together? This new trend has been visible on eBay, where older Canon cameras are now selling for a whopping range. Here’s a look at what it could mean.
In a new report from WatchCount, Canon’s Powershot 740HS has managed to break every norm. The camera, launched in 2018, has been commanding exceptional prices on eBay. In fact, a batch of 25 740HS models sold for $15,000, while 13 such models, along with 16 units of G7X Mk III were sold for $25,500.

While a set of the Canon 740HS costs that much, the singular model costs about $1000. The point and shoot was originally sold for under $500, and now, it is commanding twice the price. This is something else for a device of this nature, especially when you keep in mind that it is designed for entry-level photographers.

The Canon PowerShot device houses a 20MP 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor with DIGIC 8 processor and a 24-960mm lens. There is also a 10 fps burst rate, 4K video recording features, 5-axis image stabilization, and a 922K-dot tilting LCD up to 180° flip-up. This makes the camera perfect for travel, vlogging, some wildlife and quick Bluetooth transfer.
One of the reasons for its return is the 40x zoom lens, which is far better than most ones you see on smartphones. Then there is the flip-screen that videographers will adore. Moreover, since the camera has been discontinued, it is further boosting its demand. Some are ready to pay a premium because vintage cameras are now in fashion, and most people prefer rather purchase a used camera that meets their aesthetics than a whole new full frame that costs thousands of dollars.
Coming back to the story itself, it appears the set of 14 cameras were perhaps purchased by someone who is a reseller, which means they can buy it for less and perhaps charge slightly more. This is seen in any business, not just for older cameras. And if the 740HS trends due to Instagram and TikTok, there is a possibility that a reseller has figured out this trend, and they are restocking the set for their users.
Keeping the current trend in mind, Canon cameras, especially the point and shoot, are holding up their values better than most. It remains to be seen how far this will go. But for now, it seems that the tide is still in Canon’s favor.
