Canon cameras, especially its DSLRs, continue to hold a special place in people’s hearts. The company introduced several exciting models, including 6D, 1 DX, and 7D. However, Canon’s 5D series wins hands down in many ways. While 5D’s most cameras are no longer in production, it appears that the last model, 5D Mark IV, is also facing the same fate. Here’s a look.
The Canon 5D Mark IV was launched in 2016, just prior to the era of mirrorless cameras. Coined as one of the best DSLRs of its time, the model was ahead of its competitors. However, as it marks its 10th year, it appears the camera will no longer be produced. According to a report from Asobinet, Canon Japan has now listed the camera as backordered, meaning you can no longer purchase it — and realistically, they aren’t likely to make any more. Even on Canon USA, you can’t buy the camera.

While there is no clear reason for the camera’s discontinuation, it may be due to the launch of the R5 II. The latter was introduced in 2024, and since then, Canon has been releasing newer firmware updates to make the model more compelling.
The 5D Mark IV is still a great option for many serious photographers. The camera features a 30MP sensor, can record 4K video at 30 fps, and offers an ISO range up to 102400. The camera also feels nice in your hands, like the 5D Mark II, and it is quite weather-sealed for different shooting conditions. In fact, we were floored by its autofocus performance, which was fantastic even in low light. As we explained in our review:
In extremely low light situations, the hit rate is simply astounding. Very few Nikon cameras can keep up like this. Part of that has to do with the autofocus system being very similar to the 1DX Mk II’s. It just works.
Similarly, the DSLR also offered exceptional image quality. You get a good dynamic range, and the high ISO results were fantatsic. The RAW files also offer better highlight retention and can pull details from shadows. If you are looking for a camera that can work in any situation, this one is for you. The only concern back then was that mirrorless was taking over, which made it impossible for one to choose a DSLR, as they were clearly phasing out. This discontinuity further proves that most companies are not thinking about them seriously, and that is quite.
If you want to get your hands on the camera, the best is to check out Amazon. You’ll get it for just $2000.
Otherwise, if you want similar image quality, consider the Canon EOS R if you can get your hands on one. It was essentially the 5D Mk IV’s sensor in a mirrorless camera and given a new processor and upgrades. It’s a camera that we as the Phoblographer continue to use in our reviews alongside newer camera bodies.
