Before the holiday season and before Black Friday, we’re updating our LUMIX 50mm f1.8 review. You can find our full review here, but the latest findings are below for you to check out. If you’re using the lens for photography, I think that you’ll probably want to skip this update.
Ease of Use Update November 2025
The LUMIX 50mm f1.8, which I still consider to be one of the best 50mm lenses on the market, has got a new firmware update as of a few weeks ago. Here are the details from Panasonic’s website:
- The focus ring can be used as a control ring (*6), enabling for assigning key functions, and the focus rotation direction can be selected in MF mode.
If you’re a photographer, we think that you can skip this update. This lens lacks to tactile necessities to make it something that you’d want to use for aperture control or other things around the lens. To really make that work, the system and the lens need to be designed with that in mind from the start.
As it is, the only LUMIX lens to have an aperture ring is the 50mm f1.4 from the Pro lineup. LUMIX desperately needs to add to this lineup of glass in a way that’s unique. It’s nice that we’ve got this feature now. But I think you can all agree that we could’ve skipped it.
