Is Sony 100mm F2.8 GM Macro Worth $1500?

A few days ago, we reported that Sony would be announcing a new offering for Macro users, and recently, the company has introduced the said lens: FE 100mm f2.8 Macro GM OSS. The lens is designed for E-mount cameras and includes “featuring 1.4x magnification, advanced stabilization, and intuitive handling.” But, is this device something photographers should choose for their needs? Let’s have a look.

As part of the G Master universe, the 100mm f2.8 Macro is said to deliver “a standard of peak performance” that is expected from lenses in this portfolio. The 100mm is a successor to the 90mm f2.8 Macro, which was launched by Sony in 2015. So, in a way, this optic is a first lens in a long time for their mirrorless series. With a teleconverter, the 100mm Macro can offer magnification up to 2.8x. Here is a quick look at its specs:

The lens certainly has some exciting features, an advanced optical design, and manual control, all of which can be accessed through the use of buttons. However, at the same time, the lens does not offer the extra magnification that Laowa’s 100mm f2.8 2× Ultra Macro APO can offer, and there is also a $1000 price difference between the two. Laowa’s optics are good, but they do not feature weather resistance. Like Laowa, TTArtisan offers a 100mm f2.8 Macro 2X lens, catering to enthusiasts as well. It is a lower-cost option, features a lightweight build, and offers optical correction. However, it also lacks weather resistance, which is why it costs just $339.

If you are a professional photographer who shoots weddings and macro and can instead invest in a teleconverter, then the Sony 100mm is the right choice for you. However, if you are a beginner or an enthusiast just starting your journey, the Laowa 100mm could suffice your needs.

In all honesty, Sony is working to add existing focal range for its photographers who prefer the company’s sterile image quality. The 100mm Macro will certainly offer that, albeit at a price that G Master lenses are known for.
