Fujifilm’s GFX cameras and lenses have a following of their own. The company showcased how one can create medium-format cameras and lenses for the outdoors, thanks to their amazing format factor. While the GFX system is relatively new, it has a limited number of lenses, unlike the X series cameras. To further help photographers get the best of both worlds, the company has released a new patent, which showcases the design of a prime lens but with a bright aperture. Here’s a quick look.
First spotted by Asobinet, patent number P2025131334 was recently launched. It showcases the design of the 165mm f2.8 OIS lens, which seems to be for the GFX camera. The design is to work to have a compact design, which further showcases the company’s commitment to have smaller medium format cameras. Here is a look at its design:
Example 1

- Focal length: 164.91
- F-number: 2.88
- Angle of view: 18.8
- Back focal length: 60.23
At the moment, Fujifilm‘s GFX series does not have a 165mm lens; rather, they have zooms such as GF 45-100mm f4 and GF 100-200mm f5.6 OIS. While one can get a 165mm focal range with a 100-200mm lens, the challenge will be the aperture. If you want a brighter aperture, then your best bet is a prime lens. The company already has prime offerings such as GF 80mm f1.7, GF 110mm f2, and GF 250mm f4. In that regard, the 165mm can do wonders.
Photographers who are into portraiture, events, and sports may want to get their hands on the 165mm f2.8. It gives them the reach, and they will get the shallow depth of field, perfect for creating striking images. With OIS, this could mean that one will get less shake, which is perfect if you are shooting handheld.
GFX lenses are exemplary, and we did test the GF 110mm f2 when it was launched in 2018. Some of the things it gets right include gorgeous bokeh, nice colors, great close focusing, and weather sealing. So, if the 165mm can give us a much broader aperture, we will surely have a winner. Since there are no third-party variants for GFX series other than Laowa, one has to rely on Fujifilm the best. It is possible we may not see this lens in real life, but if we do, it will be liked by many.
