Tamron has been doing wonderfully well these years. They just released a new lens for Canon RF mount, making them the second company (after Sigma) to do so. Then there is their partnership with Nikon cameras, which many have praised. Although third-party lens makers struggled initially, the company included, they reinvented themselves over the years. And now, they will continue to build on their success in many ways. In other news, the company has released a firmware update for their popular Sony lens, the Tamron 70-180mm f2.8 G2.
What Does The Tamron Firmware Update Offer?
Tamron’s lenses are quite perfect. If you look at our review, you can see how well they have performed during our real-world tests. And now, the company hopes to keep up the camera brands in any way possible. The Sony a9 III is a recent camera that offers an exceedingly good frame rate of 120 fps. To keep up with this continuous shooting speed, third-party lens makers try to make their lenses even faster. Tamron is no differrent.
The 70-180mm f2.8 G2’s autofocus works better in certain modes than others. That’s because it still is a third-party lens. And so, with the new firmware, users now get a chance to have a better autofocus while zooming with the a9 III in the AF-C mode, which was not possible last time. In addition, the company also allows the a9 III users to shoot continuously up to 120 fps in AF-S, DMF, or MF focus mode.
Despite the fame of third-party lenses, companies like Sony have been limiting the lenses in some ways. For instance, the lenses from Tamron or Sigma can’t function at full autofocus to match Sony’s speed. This may be a challenge for action and sports photographers who are looking to purchase cost-effective yet fast lenses for their work. One also has to think about the rising prices of photographic equipment, which pushes people to shift to a better alternative.
The Company is on The Right Path
Unlike Sigma, Tamron has really evolved in numerous ways. Take the 70-180mm f2.8 G2, for instance. It is such a good lens that we did not find any cons for it in our review! Here’s what our test found: “Optically, it’s pretty darn great for anyone who doesn’t want a clinical look overall. Performance-wise, the autofocus is just as snappy as the lenses that Sony makes. It’s also as weather-resistant as a modern lens can really get. Because of its light weight, you’ll be happy carrying it everywhere.”

However, the only issue we think this could be for some people is the lack of reach. You know there are times when you hope you get that extra few millimeters to get that perfect close-up or better frame. That is now out of the question. However, the lens can still be a great option for travel and portrait photographers.
In fact, considering Sigma’s past performance, Tamron is clearly far ahead. Their autofocus works well with all cameras, and that is something Sigma is still unable to perfect. Moreover, their telephoto range weighs a lot, which could be due to all the lens elements. These two points are critical, especially when you have longer hours of shoot or a fast-moving subject. The company is on the right path now, and its future seems bright.
