Map Times, a Japanese camera store, has unveiled its latest ranking. It now seems that the photography market is catering to various segments, with full-frame cameras taking the lead and other sensors following right behind, too. The camera sales ranking sees all the companies take a unique place on the list, which makes us wonder whether the same can be expected next month. Without further ado, here is a look at the October camera sales.
Canon is Leading But Nikon and Sony Aren’t Far Behind
- Canon EOS R5 Mark II
- Fujifilm X100VI
- Sony a7 IV
- Sony a7C II
- Fujifilm X-T5
- Nikon Z f
- Canon EOS R6 Mark II
- Fujifilm X-T50
- Ricoh GR III
- Nikon Z6 III
Breaking down the list, Map Times revealed that the EOS R5 Mk II topped the list as the pre-orders were delivered this time. The X100VI and the X-T5 are surprising additions, especially when the company is facing a shortage of supply. However, due to their high demand, many people are placing pre-orders. Once they are delivered, the cameras will continue to be at the top spot. Sony cameras have been popular, but the report says that cashback offers have been very helpful for them.
The company also shared the list of its second-hand models, and Nikon seems to dominate there, while Sony comes first.
- Sony a7 III
- Canon EOS R5
- Nikon Z f
- Sony a7C II
- Nikon Z fc
- Sony a7RV
- Nikon Z 50
- Fujifilm X-T5
- Nikon Z6
- Nikon Z5
As seen above, Nikon is the strongest performer, with many still investing in good-condition Nikon cameras. Sony’s a7 III is an exceptional camera that has been continuously ranked first for the past nine months. The report states that as long as there is a demand for Fujifilm, there will be a need for second-hand models, too.
Second-Hand Camera Market is Just as Important
From its looks, Nikon is the ideal choice for second-hand cameras. The reason for this could vary, from the trust factor to better performance or general loyalty to the brand. The same goes for Sony, which is still considered a significant mirrorless camera brand. Despite Canon’s dominating position for new cameras, only one device has been named in the second-hand camera list. Perhaps people don’t easily switch to older Canon, as the newer devices seem like a better choice.
What is interesting to note is that both Nikon and Canon Mirrorless are gradually catching up to Sony, but despite beginning the switch at the same time in this segment, Nikon has surpassed Canon. At least, its older models aren’t as desirable by customers.
Whatever may be the case, this trend is only limited to Japan and could have a very distinct effect in America or Europe. However, in all these major regions, second-hand cameras are ideal choices, as one can buy an older full-frame model at slightly higher prices than getting an APS-C that barely has great functions. One must also note that for many enthusiasts looking to switch to a camera from their phones, an older full-frame model gives them more liberty to experiment with new lenses in post-production. Perhaps, for content creators on a budget, an APS-C like the Z50 is a better choice, as the latest Z50 II is closer to $900.
In a way, Nikon is carving out space for itself in the used camera market, which is quite interesting. Sony may follow the lead next time, but that remains to be seen. For now, we are just glad to see that Nikon is becoming a brand of its own.
