The Panasonic GH7 is being announced today, and I truly feel like I should get a few things out of the way that you might want to know. First off, I was briefed on this camera before its announcement, but I declined reviewing it and doing more than writing about the announcement. In my briefing, I concluded that the camera isn’t really for photographers as if anything, it’s basically a suped-up version of the G7 II and a baby version of the S5 II. That’s to say that this is what I think of it for photography at least. But for video, I think that the GH7 could be an excellent tool for the artist and music video community. But here’s what photographers might want to know about the new GH7.
Panasonic GH7 Tech Specs Photographers Will Care About for Shooting Stills

- 25.2MP BSI CMOS Four Thirds sensor
- PDAF
- Weather resistance
- Real Time LUT to the same standards as the new S9.
- 13+ stops of dynamic range
- Active image stabilization with 7.5 stops of compensation
- 1.84K dot LCD screen
- 3.68k dot viewfinder
- 6 frames a second when shooting with continuous autofocus in burst mode
- 14 frames a second with mechanical shutter in AFS mode
This could be cool for a lot of photographers out there if you want a specific look and with the character that a Four Thirds sensor can give you. But honestly, I feel like Panasonic’s best stuff is full-frame. The GH6 was more of a video camera than anything, and the GH7 is more or less the same.
With all this said, I wouldn’t call in a Black Magic or RED camera and berate them on why their cameras don’t have functional hot shoes so that I can shoot with my Profoto lights. And I don’t think I should do that here either, even though this has a real Panasonic hot shoe.
