The Tamron f2 prime lenses will likely be cheaper options for those who want to build a solid lens library on the cheap.
Tamron took a good long while before fully committing themselves to the Sony E mount. But if recent news is anything to go by, they plan on making up for the lost time. No fewer than seven patents have been filed in Japan for new Tamron f2 prime lenses. This news should be welcomed by those who want to build a nice, affordable lens collection. Join us after the break for all the details.
The news, first shared by Sony Alpha Rumors, will likely be well received by current and prospective Sony users. Tamron has been making high-quality lenses for a long time, and the lenses they have released with a Sony E mount so far have been rather excellent (check out our review of the new Tamron 24mm f2.8 Di III OSD prime here).

The report states that Tamron has filed patents for 20mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 40mm, 60mm, and 85mm f2 prime lenses. That’s quite the spread! And while no other details are available about the lenses in regard to pricing and release dates, it sure is nice to see another third party go all-in on another lens mount.
We are still hoping that, at some point, Tamron decides to up the ante by developing and selling prime lenses with much faster apertures in the f1.4 to f1.2 range. Honestly, the Sony platform is sorely lacking in lenses this fast. If Tamron can get the jump on both Sony and Sigma with lenses like that, they will be laughing all the way to the bank. But the discovery of this bevy of f2 lenses is great as well. After all, competition in the lens space is a great thing.

We would imagine these Tamron f2 prime lenses would be cost-effective too, seeing as the new Tamron 24mm f2.8 costs just $349. This is just fine with us; everyone should be able to buy some faster glass on a budget. As soon as more details about these prime lenses emerge, we will be sure to update you.
