Been struggling to switch between portrait and landscape orientation? The Magic Plate is a quick release tripod plate that promises to be a lightweight solution.
Ever missed a shot because of struggling to switch from portrait to landscape orientation? Having difficulty adjusting and tilting your tripod’s ball head? Are L-brackets no longer an option for you because of their size and weight? If you answered yes to one or all of these, the Magic Plate could be your lightest and easiest solution.
Currently being funded on Kickstarter, the Magic Plate project by Taipei-based Silence Corner promises to be a better solution for composing photos in the portrait/vertical orientation, combining the functionality of an L-bracket for half the size and weight. With this contraption, there’s no need for you to take it out from the ball head. Simply press the release button on the side, tilt the camera to the side to quickly switch to portrait mode, and tighten the lock handle to secure the camera. That’s it, you’re all set!
The Magic Plate is only a fraction of the L-bracket, weighing only 40g and with dimensions of 65 x 38.5 x 10mm. However, it promises to be able to support the weight of nearly all cameras, as shown in the 30kg push force load test, 25k load test, and camera combination tests. It’s compatible with Universal Arca Swiss and Peak Design Capture Clip v3, and has a standard strap hole. Sporting a modern industrial design, it comes in two colors: Silence Black and Corner Gray.

Landscape photographers will particularly find this contraption interesting. Not only will it be a more compact and lightweight option to the regular L-bracket, but it will also provide a quicker and easier setup. It’s also looking to be a versatile tool that can be used through the years, even with camera changes and upgrades.
If this is a project you’re keen on supporting and a tool you’d like to get your hands on, you can find out more and make your pledge on the Magic Plate Kickstarter page.
