If zines are your thing, this photo zine project about nomadic sheep farming across Italy could be an interesting addition to your collection.
It’s been a while since our last zine feature, so we thought about sharing our most recent zine find. Moments in Time, which is currently being funded on Kickstarter, will come in several volumes as reportage about nomadic sheep farming across Italy. If you’re looking for the next zine project to add to your collection, this could be something right up your alley.
Mauro Scattolini, a photographer hailing from the historic town of Padua in Italy, thought about using the zine format to bring to light what it means to be a nomadic shepherd. While most of the world think of shepherds as mere sheep guardians, it actually entails more than taking care of a flock and guiding it through endless plains and valleys.
“But in truth, there is so much more. In fact, UNESCO in these very days is finalizing their response on the admission of Transhumance as a Human Heritage,” Scattolini stressed. “Being a Nomadic Shepherd means living in symbiosis with the environment, creating a bond between you and the surroundings. Living in balance with it. Without roots, they were explorers, not just of unknown places, but cultures, traditions, civilizations.”
Scattolini intends Moments in Time to be a five-volume photo zine collection which will cover three months’ worth of reportage across North Italy, from the Italian Alps to Lake Varese. It promises to showcase a “stunning collection of unique landscapes and candid moments from a tradition that will soon be a Human Heritage.” For this, he’s hoping to raise $33,252 to mostly cover travel and printing expenses.
