This is the LEX, a DIY camera featuring Sony’s E Mount but with the fun twist that it shoots 35mm Film.
It is quite common to see new products these days come out in order to facilitate using old lenses on newer cameras. However, it is rare to find products that facilitate utilizing newer technology on older mediums, but that is exactly what this camera, called LEX, does. You see, LEX is a camera that you can 3D print and build yourself at home and it utilizes a modern lens mount in Sony’s E-Mount, but the cool thing is that it does not boast some digital sensor, no, the LEX is designed to make use of 35mm film.
That’s right, with the LEX you can use your modern Sony E-Mount lenses to capture what you are seeing with 35mm film. Isn’t that neat?
The LEX camera is the brainchild of Alexander Gee, who himself is a Sony shooter. Gee tells Sony Alpha Rumors that he created the LEX because he loves his Sony E-Mount lenses and wanted to be able to use them with film. The idea of toting around a kit for his Sony gear and a separate kit for film was not what he wanted to be dealing with, and so, since the E-Mount is an open standard; he developed LEX to make it so all he had to do was have this film camera in his Sony kit and he would be able to shoot with film. It is actually a really logical idea when you think about it.
This is like someone took the idea of Fujifilm’s retro styling and film simulations and flipped the script, instead pairing modern lenses and design with a retro medium and image quality. What started out as a personal project for Gee has now developed into a project that he wants to share with the world, and hence, he has started promoting the LEX camera on his website. Soon you will be able to buy everything you need in order to make the LEX on your own.
So if you are a Sony shooter who also loves working with film, we highly recommend jumping on over to the LEX Optical website to sign up for updates to be notified about when the LEX is available.
