These new SD cards from SanDisk can operate at extreme temperatures such as -40° C
Western Digital has announced two new lines of [amazon_textlink asin=’B01J5RHD58′ text=’SanDisk’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’b0c239a6-ad10-11e7-8092-398eea37356e’] (WD bought Sandisk last year) SD cards aimed at unique applications and surviving extreme conditions. In terms of what will appeal to photographers, or be used by photographers the most, the new Automotive line could be something that you professionals could consider.
These new SanDisk Automotive SD cards are (as the name suggests) designed for use in cars and other vehicles, as well as in drones. These cards are able to operate at extreme temperatures such as -40c all the way up to 85c for prolonged periods of time. Western Digital also says that the new Automotive cards are AEC-Q100 Grade 3 compliant, which means that the SD cards are equipped with special data retention and health status technology, as well as other automotive hardware safety guidelines set out by the Automotive Electronics Council. Obviously, this won’t mean much to photographers or videographers, but it’s nice that the hardware has been made up to par with the standards of a council like the AEC.
These Automotive cards will be available in capacities from 8GB up to 64 GB, all rated at 80 MB/s read and 50 MB/s speeds. These capacities and speeds are obviously not all that impressive compared to some of the cards that photographers are using these days, but when you take into account the added validation and durability.
It would seem as though that photographers doing timelapses in extreme environments, such as cold snowy mountains or dry hot deserts could possibly get some extra peace of mind from these cards. As well, drone pilots could also feel a little more at ease knowing these cards were designed to withstand the pressures and changes in the environment that a drone may encounter while flying, or in the event of a potential crash.
Right now these cards will be going out to OEM partners (in other words, Ford, Toyota and other car manufacturers) and there is no word yet on if these cards will even be available directly to consumers in any form – but if they are, it would seem they may be a viable option for those concerned with data security and reliability.
Though let’s be honest, it’s not as if [amazon_textlink asin=’B01J5RH06K’ text=’SanDisk’s current line up Extreme or Extreme Pro cards’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’6dc7ebdb-ad10-11e7-a0ce-8d8b48d71280′] that are already favorites of Photographers suffer from any sort of bad reputation in this regard. They also will probably continue to be more affordable than these specially certified cards.
Regardless, if you would like mroe information about SanDisk’s latest lineup of SD cards you can find all of the information over on the SanDisk website.
