Lost in all of the totally understandable hype around the Fujifilm GFX announcement today was another notable, but far less flashy announcement for Fujifilm’s Instax line – Instax Square.

Editors note: it’s not coming to the US  in the foreseeable future according to Fujifilm.

Yes Fujifilm’s real imaging cash cow is the Instax line and their big announcement regarding its future was unveiling of a new film format, 1×1 62mm x 62mm Square Instax film. It will join the traditional rectangular format Instax color as well as the also recently announced Monochrome (Black and White) Instax film.

So far it is unclear if the new film will work in currently available Instax cameras or if specific square format Instax cameras will be required. For now, no square format cameras have been formally announced and the square format film is expected to be available in spring 2017 – Fujifilm says that one is in development but that is all the information we have.

The Instax square film is expected to be available in spring of 2017, so we would likely see this unnamed square format camera by then (assuming the square format film is not compatible with any of the other Instax cameras).

More information can be found over on Fujifilm’s Instax Square mini-site, here.
