In January of 2012, the 14-year-old daughter of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, Rosines Chávez, posted on Twitter a (now notorious) Instagram photo of herself that prompted a strong negative response from the Twitter world. The controversial photo was of Rosines holding up a wad of U.S. dollars bills while shamelessly looking directly at the camera.
Not only did this image trigger a number of parody photos from other Venezuelan users, hashtagged #Rosinesing; it also inspired the creation of what would quickly become a popular blog aptly named Rich Kids of Instagram.
Rich Kids of Instagram, launched in July of 2012, is a single-topic blog, anonymously run, that showcases Instagram photos that offer glimpses to the lavish lifestyles of rich young people from all over the world. Its purpose is to openly criticize the excessiveness of these kids while the rest of the middle-class world is still recovering from the Great Recession. And it runs with the help of the Instagram users themselves, getting its leads using the #rkoi hashtag that it encourages its followers to use.
To date, the now successful blog has posted hundreds of photos – some so incredibly extravagant they almost seem farfetched, gained thousands of followers, gotten plenty of media coverage, and inspired the development of a new reality TV show, Rich Kids of Beverly Hills, that follows the opulent lives of a group of teenagers from Beverly Hills who were notoriously featured in the blog.
Most importantly, it has triggered a collective, worldwide indignation for the insensitive displays of excessive wealth. See some of the photos featured in the sensational blog after the jump.
