It has come to our attention the possible replacement for the Canon EF 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L IS may be making an appearance at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The lens will find its way into the hands of select photographers at the games. No one seems to know if there is going to be an announcement for the lens before the Winter Olympics. The games may just be a testing ground for the replacement lens if it does actually exist.
Typically, Canon and Nikon tend to try to release new lenses and cameras in time for the big new games because that is when agencies, professionals and newswires (who are their biggest customers of the higher end professional products) will spend the money on upgrades based on the responses and needs of their staff.
But that also makes us wonder even more as the 1D X is starting to show its age despite firmware updates. It’s still an excellent camera, but may need an upgrade.
