In an unusual move, Nikon released a patent that describes a 100mm f/2.5 medium format lens. Nikon has never done this before. So it has many curious.
There is another recent patent for an AE sensor RGBW (or RGBY) array where the W (Y) will measure the brightness of a scene and a “transparent organic EL” that is assumed to be a layer on top of the sensor and can be used as a shutter or a ND filter. Nikon has also recently Nikon filed a patent in Japan (2013-156379) for electrically turning ON or OFF the optical low-pass (OLPF) a.k.a. anti-aliasing (AA) filter. In the summer Nikon put in a patent application 20130182173 for combining/stacking a dedicated AF and imaging sensors without losing any light (in theory).
It seems that the company is working on something interesting that we might see for Photokina next year.
